There is a joy to creating a sound world.

I start by creating an acoustic architecture for actors to move through, then paint the landscape of sound they live in, grounding them in that world by helping them find the right pitch or by adding foley sound effects, asking the writer about intention, working with musicians to get the best possible sound.

After recording, the work continues in post production, editing in the best takes, layering sound effects, tweaking the timing, and polishing and honing to craft the best possible version of the work.

Finally mastering. A finished product, a fully realised play or book.

My work is to help writers hear their work and maybe hear something they’ve not even thought about beforehand. I’m here to help actors and presenters lift words off a page and to give listeners an immersive experience or an absorbing wonder.

I’ve worked for many years at the BBC, in the World Service and Radio 4 and 3 - in live broadcasting and on prerecorded programmes. My specialist areas were Arts, Science and Features, Readings and especially Audio Drama. Since becoming freelance I’ve created Sound Design for Audio Drama for the Almeida Theatre, Tandem Productions and the BBC, and worked on podcasts, reading and directing books, and teaching drama students at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and LAMDA .

Have a listen.

I’m here to help you realise your book, play or podcast.
